This wasn't the fight boxing fans were expecting for the 28-year-old Joshua's next outing. The prevailing thought was that Klitschko would invoke the rematch clause in the contract with the bout to take place on Nov. 11 in Las Vegas on pay-per-view. Instead, the legendary boxer surprised everyone when he retired in August.
Joshua decided to take his mandatory IBF title fight against No. 1 contender Kubrat Pulev. However, Pulev had to bow out late due to a shoulder injury. To Joshua's credit, he still wanted to compete and Takam stepped in.
Takam had already been training for Joshua as he made a deal with the champion's manager Eddie Hearn when the Pulev fight was announced to start training camp just in case Pulev had to pull out. The No. 3-ranked IBF heavyweight debuted in 2005 and won his first 18 fights. Before the Joshua fight was announced, Takam's career highlight (and his last loss) was by unanimous decision in May 2016 to current WBO heavyweight champion Joseph Parker.
Now, Takam has the chance to shock the world against Joshua on just 11 days notice.
